Ramadan Mubarak

Tomorrow is the last day of Ramadan, the holy month when Muslims fast from food, water, smoking, etc. during the hours between sunrise and sunset. Ramadan is a time for increased focus on spirituality, self-restraint, and good deeds. It's been interesting to experience Ramadan here in Oman: The work day is split so people can nap during the day (and party late into the evening). The stores have all kinds of sales and promotions (think holiday shopping) and are open late into the night. Restaurants are closed until after sunset, and eating in public (or even in your car!) is not allowed. After the sunset prayer, families hurry home to their Iftar meal, or picnic by their cars off the roadside or on the beach. Muslims traditionally break their fast with dates and milk or water, and we were pleasantly surprised to receive a complimentary box of dates and water at the petrol station one evening at sunset!
